The Parkzitadelle on Harburg’s Schlossinsel

Nothing new comes about without a context. From fortifications to a castle, shipyards, a harbour and finally to public open space, in the new park on Harburg’s Schlossinsel (literally ‘castle island’) elements of these previous uses have been reinterpreted and composed in a contemporary manner. Inclined lawn areas at the edges lend the space dynamic motion and strengthen the perspectives within the park as well as externally and internally from various elevations. Similar to fragments of the citadel’s fortifications, the grading concept generates an interplay of visual links between the open space, the buildings, and the water.
