Lisbon | Algerian Pavilion EXPO 98

Algerian Pavilion for the EXPO 1998 in Lisbon

At the end of the millennium we interpreted the Sahara as an ocean, as an installation that could be experienced in a tent (el khaima) within the pavilion. The Sahara as an ocean is a link between the past (a former ocean), the present (a desert sea) and the future (a source of energy). The Algerian pavilion symbolises a part of the historical, cultural, and industrial heritage of the country and also conveys a connection to the topic ‘The oceans, a legacy for the future’ with all its maritime dimensions. Al Djazair, Al Djazira is also the symbol and the interpretation of the island in the Mediterranean Sea in the northern part of the country which has the ocean of the Sahara to its south.
