Rotterdam | Insel der Kulturen

Islands of the Cultures

In addition to the development of the existing substance and the improvement of the infrastructure, the idea behind the redesign of the Valkeniersweide included the adaptation of the spatial structure so that new functional areas such as athletic fields and dog walking areas could be integrated without interfering with other active or passive activities. The circulation system and the site furniture emphasise this intention; thinning out the vegetation improves accessibility and visually extends the park. In order to improve site identification, the traditional ‘occupation’ of the terrain with an island is planned, the shape of which is similar to a (tulip) bulb in order to underline the horticultural traditions and culture of land reclamation in Holland. The island is intended to serve as a meeting point for users. Parks and gardens have long been and continue to be an element of the cultural expression of a culture. They are also an expression of development and at the same time symbols of an ancient representation of paradise. Although the park’s design should reflect its users, i.e. people of different ages, classes, traditions, and cultures, it should primarily offer them an opportunity to relax and enjoy life.
